Val di Sole World Cup - Aaron Gwin wins 5th WC DH of the season!

by Ian Hylands
Aug 21, 2011 at 6:57

Aaron Gwin has just become the first man to win 5 World Cup DH races in one season!

With his win today at Val di Sole Aaron Gwin has become the first man to win more than 4 DH World Cup races in one year. In 2000 Anne Caroline Chausson won 6 out of 8 races on the women's side, but the men's has been stuck at 4 since the second year of the DH World Cup. In 1994 François Gachet won 4 out of 6 races, and starting in 1998 Nico Vouilloz won 4 races a year, three years in a row, but not until now 11 years later has anyone been able to raise that bar.

Men's top 5

1. Aaron Gwin
2. Danny Hart
3. Gee Atherton
4. Troy Brosnan
5. Cameron Cole

Aaron Gwin taking the historic fifth win for a 7 race World Cup season. Brosnan (4), Danny Hart (2), Gee Atherton (3), Cam Cole (5), and Aaron Gwin (1).

It was a sunny day in Val di Sole and conditions were dry and dusty as the seventh and final round of this years World Cup DH got underway. The hot seat changed hands fairly infrequently after Mitch Ropelato took it fairly early on. Remi Thirion raised the bar by over 4 seconds on his run, and then Neethling took the hot seat before Minnaar took it away from him. Matti Lehikoined put in a solid run to move into to second with 14 riders to go, then Brook Macdonald looked like he might do it but only managed to edge out Lehikoinen for second. Cameron Cole put in a crazy fast run leading all the way down to beat out Minnaar by 0.8 with a 3:16.529, and then we moved into the top 10 and the 3 minute gaps. Markus Pekoll looked like he had a fast run in him but he flatted near the bottom, and then it was Gee Atherton's turn. Gee has won on this track before, and he was fastest by 1.6 seconds at the split with a run that ended up over 2 seconds faster than Cameron Cole. Troy Brosnan qualified 4th and had an amazing run here today, starting a bit slow but moving up at every split. He finished up only 1.6 seconds behind Gee and moved into 2nd, guaranteeing him his first ever World Cup Podium. Danny Hart has had a pretty good year, and showed everyone here that he can do it. In his typical loose style he was 1.6 seconds ahead at the first split and then almost 3 seconds faster than Gee at the finish to move into the hot seat. The way he slashed the final berm was spectacular, roosting the spectators. And then it was Aaron Gwin's turn. Another 2.6 seconds faster than anyone else at the split, he put in a run that was 1.23 seconds faster than Hart. Steve Smith qualified 2nd fastest but didn't run today because of an injury he sustained in practice.

qwin has just made the world cup races boring, no one really has a chance to win it unless qwin has a big off or makes a lot of mistakes. although val di sole was by far the best race of the year IMO.

Boring? If one rider winning consistently makes an entire race series boring for you, you're not a real fan of the sport and you should probably find something different to watch. I think I should go see a doctor because clearly I'm some abnormal freak of nature who finds every rider, all the stories going on in a season, and every race absolutely awesome and captivating to watch. And EVERYONE has a chance to win if they push hard, work hard, and earn it. I like how you're basically insulting all the other riders by saying they aren't good enough to get a win because you seem to think Gwin is unstoppable, and as we clearly saw at La Bresse, he's not unstoppable, he is beatable, he's human, he can in fact lose.

flag mtbrider71 (Aug 21, 2011 at 21:36)
Did you really just say no one has a chance to win? Lol do you think it is easy for him to win every race? This has been one of the most incredible things to watch. What just because it wasn't your favorite who won. He is far from my favorite and i can't say i called his sudden jump ahead but i can certainly appreciate it.

cyrix, this season has certainly been boring in comparison to last season. Watching Greg and Gee battle it out and then it all coming down to one race was as exciting as it gets! Theres nothing exciting about knowing with almost absolute certainty who is going to win, and knowing he will do it with no sick whips, no exploding corners, and no massive no footed ball rides. I'm not taking anything away from Aaron Gwin, he has shown us what can be done a downhill bike and hopefully next year all the other top riders will step it up like they did after Sam Hills domination in 2007 and we'll see even faster racing, but competition is exciting and this year we have simply not seen competition.

I find the username "emotion-captured" to be almost ironic considering what you're saying. Are you saying Dan Athertons comeback is boring? Are you saying Troy Brosnan's season is boring? Are you saying Stevie Smith having his best season so far is boring? Or how about Hart? His season is boring? Holy shit, how about Peaty? My god his season was...oh wait you think it's boring.... I can't believe you are going to sit there and act like all of the effort these riders have put in is boring. Try looking past who wins a race, try looking at the actual riders and their stories before you tell me it's "boring." You saying this season is "boring" is an insult to the riders who raced. There is more to downhill than just who wins. I'm sorry you can't focus on anything beyond that. Excuse me while I get stoked for all of the riders I mentioned having good seasons. I apologize if it contradicts your idea that downhill has suddenly become "BORING."

cyrix, you must be the biggest fan in the world, you ignorant ass... people have their opinions and you have no right to judge them and get all butthurt over it... i race both 4x and DH, as well as never missing a free caster broadcast of the DH races in 2 years, that means waking up at 4AM every race, i get stoked to watch riders blast down a track, and i love it when i see a time smashed by a guy thats not consistently top 10, you should have seen me when i watched brosnan's run and harts runs, its stuff like that that makes me love watching DH, everything about this season was good except the predictability

 Great job Gwin..!
I can't believe some of the comments above!
the guy earned it all straight up, it's not a sport where you can buy or cheat your way to the top.
It's too bad that these people can't just be good sport's and accept that he's a great rider that's leading WC into another level of racing...
Who cares if he's american, who cares if he doesn't jump up in the air screaming when he wins (doesn't mean he isn't stoked), who cares if he's leaving your old favorites in the dust, he's killing it and others need to step their game up...
He's not my favorite WC rider either, but you gotta recognize Gwin's talent and the fact that he's pulled off a record that no one has pulled off before, not even when the others were right in their prime...

It seems that everyone who has something negative to say about Aaron Gwin fits into the following categories:

A. Under the age of 18
B. From the United Kingdom
C. Seriously lacking in education and perspective
D. A combination of all of the above

Gwin is obviously an incredible racer and is a great ambassador for the sport of mountain biking. He is humble, soft spoken, and extremely gracious to the sport and his competitors. He seems truly humbled by his own success.

No matter how hard you work and how badly you beat the competition...act like you've been there before.

flag cyrix (Aug 21, 2011 at 20:38)
My favorite part is the people saying him winning has made the sport "boring". I guess they just don't actually give a damn about the sport because no matter who wins, the races and the riders are FAR FAR FAR from boring. I look forward to every single race to see how each rider will do, see who will step up and really push it, see who will have a crazy save after getting loose, see who will come back from injury, etc...etc... People who say Gwin makes the sport boring should find another sport to watch.

Who wins the race is just icing on the cake, the real good stuff is all the crazy stories that go on in a season surrounding the teams/riders/tracks.

It's retarded but well, every super emotional supporting in sport is retarded, that's why half of footbal spectators should be stripped of all belongings to find some proper problem in life, instead of hate towards other team or nationality, because 11 pimps lot the game on the grass field.

But at the same time you do have some problems with distancing yourselves to the eternal glory of stars and stripes promised by founding fathers, hence we are mean Big Grin because we know it pixxes you off greatly Big Grin USA is the new French buahaha

WAKI is quite right, I'd be going wild for Gwin if he wasn't American (well I would have been at the start of the season but I would still have got a bit bored later on), but he's American and that means when he does well somewhere in the world Americans are reinforcing their belief that they are better than everyone else.

Another important thing to learn about Brits is we will always support the underdog, we see Gwin doing well and we think 'right, good for him, now lets see some wildcard like Danny Hart thrash him'.

How can one downhill rider make us Americans think we are better than everyone else come on! I sure don`t feel that. Aaron is just some dude that I never met that rides bikes that is fast sure its cool he is American but he is just doing his job. Everyone thinks they are better then others, it is a shame. Its just a race, there will always be some rider no matter where he is from, winning races and some lame ass hating them for it....

So Gwin's american. big deal. Like all racers he's in a battle with himself to understand what it takes to wake up and deliver. Right now he's on fire and all credit to him. That's the same battle every racer has. Anyone who has ever raced knows what a mountain that is to climb. Downhill is a personal battle with fear, fitness, instants in time where it can all crash and burn. Go Gwin you freaking legend.

Though to be fair it has calmed down quite a bit which is good to see. Less jingoistic arrogant behavior.

Hopefully everyone (Sam, Stevie) get better and rip it at worlds would suck to not have the top 2 race.

I have a feeling next season will produce somthing a little different... Brosnan will be that much stronger Fairclough should have his knee reassembled and Sam will be back.

AG has deserved it, no question, he's raised the bar if that's boring so be it, everyone needs to up there game or maybe its just that cycle again and the changing of the guard is really taking place.

Peaty is not consistent anymore, no Hill, always seems to be getting injured trying to take it to the next level, Brendawg also on consistent injury list, Hart, Bronson proved they're up to it also lets see if they can back it up following next year and take it up a gear like AG has.

WTH has happened to Blinky this year though, hes really dropped off the pace, I would have thought him having Cam Cole on board would have spurred him on even more but he seems to have helped Brook MacDonald more than himself or CC? shocker for him compared to where he has been in the last 3 years.

Lets see what Worlds throws up in Champery..

Gain started doing good at end of last season. His contract was up. He mite have still won this year if he was with yeti. And the field now has to setup. Sam hill was doing great for a couple years. I don't rememeber getting so mad about. Just give credit to all of them. They work hard look at peaty he is still doing very well and works for it.he is still one of my favs and cedric. Riders just keep getting better. So if one does really well. And this is the first year of his winning. He is on his game this year. I seem to remember people think hill was unstoppabl le till someone beat him. So next year shows the ulama coming that anything can be possible.

Congrats to Gwin for having a dominant year! But let me play Devil's Advocate. I find it very difficult to accept that simply switching bikes would make someone so dominant. If that's the case, Leov should be having a great season too. "Training hard" to get dominant results would simply imply that the likes of Gee, Greg, etc. do not train off season. Or it's also like saying that Gwin himself didnt train when he rode for Yeti. The obvious riding position that I noticed for Gwin is that he rides tucked in now than he did last year, thanks to Tomac. But where does he find the time or line to take to be consistently up on either the first or second time splits? After that, its his race to lose. All I'm trying to say is that Trek, the company, might have something to do with it. After all, the bottomline is Gwin is a business investment. Results = Sales. Is it just a coincidence that Trek was also behind having an athlete who was so dominant that he won 7 times on a Road Touring Race? This is ALL my theory, which I'm entitled to say and of course they are all WITHOUT proofs. In fact, I dont even know how the speed traps work. All I know is, they're humanly programmed or worse if humanly operated. AGAIN, this is all theory, just something to think about. And besides, I dont think even Gwin himself knows anything about it. He even cant believe he's won sometimes, judging from his own interviews. Again, before you hate, THINK.

Congratulations to Gwin for that World Cup win (and overall).
Hope it will motivate the other riders for next year.

But, to be the successor of Vouilloz (in terms of titles) Gwin needs a little bit more than that...like 4 more world cup and 7 world champion title (not including the 3 junior WC Vouilloz won before being Elite).

"In 2000 Anne Caroline Chausson won 6 out of 8 races on the women's side"
Well, sure she did that in 2000 but also in 2001 and, even better, she won 7 out of 8 races in 1998 and 1999.

flag moutnbiker (Aug 21, 2011 at 22:27)
 Oisans,
I dont think you can compare the Mens titles to the Woman's titles. Thats kind of like apples and oranges.

And as far as Gwin being a successor to Vouilloz goes. I think its way to early to count your chickens.
  • + 1
flag Oisans (Aug 22, 2011 at 4:43)
I am not comparing anything, just quoting the article, and, since it talked about Chausson, it should at least be right.

As for comparing Gwin and Vouilloz, that's what I said, Gwin needs to win a "bit" more to be called Vouilloz's successor (once again, in terms of won titles). It's a long way.
Time will tell.

And, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Gwin winning everything, or being better than Vouilloz one day.
He earned it this year. Working hard pays.

Fair enough. Just saw you do the ones related to that post and didn’t see the reason. Thought it was some xenophobic issue or something. Props don’t mean anything but they do illustrate the general consensus of a community, which makes it interesting to see. Cyrix, you're still around? Figured a mathematical genius like you would have figured out a way to make 29 inch wheels work for DH. What with them being the future and all according to yourself......

I must respectfully disagree about props illustrating the general consensus of a community. Go back and look at some of the other World Cup articles this year to see some severe xenophobic prop distribution.
