Neko Mulally wins 2011 Highland Pro GRT!

by Ian Hylands
May 15, 2011 at 20:20

In what has got to be one of the best races of his life so far, Neko Mulally has beaten Aaron Gwin and Justin Leov by over 2 seconds to give Trek World Racing a complete sweep of the mens podium at round two of the Pro GRT. Although a few people have said that Gwin crashed in his final when I spoke with him about it he denied it and said Neko simply just beat him. In the womens race Jill Kintner beat out Joanna Peterson and Lauren Daney, who has just moved up to the pro class.

It was a wet rainy day at Highland Mountain Bike Park in New Hampshire today, conditions that definitely favored East Coast rider Neko Mulally.

"this is what I grew riding, so I wasn't really sweating it at the top, I knew it was going to be like this. I had a solid run, I didn't expect to do better than the guys on my team, but I'm stoked!"

uh-oh, I forsee a Cierra Smith vs Lauren Daney war from the fans: both riding on Specialized bikes, both 15/16years old, both tearing it up in the pros.

"Gwin looked to be having a good run but crashed in his final."

And he still got second, there's easily your 2.5 seconds.

flag JKSR (May 17, 2011 at 5:10)
Maybe his crash wasn't so much of a crash but a stumble, I don't believe he had a get off. Neko was pinned!

Really doesn't make any difference, that's a part of racing, and that's part of how races are won and lost. Neko had the advantage for sure being an East Coast rider and well used to the wet muddy conditions. Far from what I think Gwin normally rides and trains on in California and the West...

flag p-romano (May 17, 2011 at 12:39)
But it is still important. Neko won and it is awesome but the details of events are important
  • + 1
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (May 17, 2011 at 22:55)
Yes, but we can only mention what we're told. None of the official news or press releases stated that he fell. And most of the time in a race they don't clarify that someone slipped a pedal, or tagged a tree or or or.... Really it's only important if you care about the details, and we'll report them as we get them, but it's not important to the outcome of the race...

Okay. I have a question. Not to be s smartass but because I am truly curious. Why do Pinkbike staff create the articles instead of people that were at the event?
  • + 1
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (May 18, 2011 at 18:10)
Because there usually isn't anyone at any of the smaller events writing articles. Instead we use email and phones to get the information and photos about the event and then write the story. At larger and more established events there are usually people that are paid to write event reports and shoot photos etc. and at certain events we have our own staff on hand to shoot photos and write the stories.
Even if there is someone there shooting photos and writing the words we usually still put everything together. These photos were shot by Matt Delorme and they were sent to us along with the results by the event organizers. Then I normally try to get a few quotes and info about the race over the phone from the winners, but that's not always easy, cel phones still don't work well at a lot of smaller places...
Someday maybe we'll have a million dollar budget and we can pay a photographer as well as a videographer and a writer to be at every event, until then this works fairly well...

So I asked Aaron about it this weekend at the US Open and he did not fall in his race run. No idea what Commencel is talking about but according to Gwin he had a decent run and Neko simply beat him. Please don't make up stories and post them as comments...
