Jump Ship - Practice day one

by Ian Hylands
Jun 10, 2011 at 23:57

Today was the first real day of practice for the Jump Ship event in Victoria's inner harbour. While a few of the guys have been here for the past day or so, most riders arrived today and got their first chance to check out the course and get some practice time in. Jump Ship is basically a dirt jump contest, it just happens to be on a barge in Victoria Harbour. And while initial plans were to have the barge anchored a ways out in the water, logistics made it very difficult, so the barge is anchored at one of the main docks, right across from the docks of the events main sponsor, Harbour Air. This is also a better place for spectators, and there is a beer garden with bleachers only about 30 feet from the barge. As a bonus they had a projector with the hockey game playing, that's a winning situation.

Graham Agassiz checks out the wind from the top of the roll in. Wind played a big part in practice today as riders spent a lot of time waiting for it to die just enough to take a run. Jump Ship in Victoria BC

The course starts with a step down off of the the start tower, that's almost a requirement now at dirt jump comps, and then goes into two doubles, wooden lips with dirt landings. The biggest issue with having a dirt jump contest on a barge is that there's very little room. If you get a little squirrely and end up off line, there really isn't anywhere to go. Only a few feet from the side of the landing is the side of the barge. After the two jumps there are a pair of quarters at the far end of the barge, the line gaps right to left between them. This was a bit of an awkward spot for a few people today, with more than a couple of riders going almost to flat on the landing. After the gap there is a small roller followed by another jump, and then another small quarter. It's possible to transfer from the last quarter across to the landing of the step down, Brandon was the only one I saw actually try it though...

Jordy Lunn nothing...
Jordy Lunn has come up with a lot of great jump events over the years, from the Ice Cream Jam to Peanut Butter Knife Fight and others, they've all been fun and interesting. Jordy, nothing...

Jump Ship is an FMB World Tour Silver event, and there are a lot of riders here hoping for FMB points. After the FISE event in Montpellier last weekend Sam Pilgrim has a pretty good lead on the series, but there are a few riders here that might challenge him in the next few events.

Brandon Semenuk. This will be Brandons first event of the 2011 FMB World Tour and he s here to get some points on the board before heading to 26 Trix in Austria next week.

Anthony Messere with a nice flat 360. Anthony has been doing well this year with a 2nd place finish at Ranch Style and 3rd at the Teva Games. Not bad for a kid...

Mike Montgomery gaps between the quarters at the end of the barge.
Mike Montgomery won the best trick at Ranchstyle this year and he just won the Teva Games slopestyle. With a second place finish at Crankworx last year he is definitely a contender at any contest he enters right now.

Mitch Chubey gaps between the quarters at Jump Ship in Victoria BC

Jamie Goldman gaps the quarter to quarter at the end of the barge... Jump Ship in Victoria BC
Jamie Goldman, throwing a little style into it as he gaps the quarter to quarter at the end of the barge. The trick here is to be smooth enough to keep your speed up so you can make it over the next jump that you can see on the far right. Anthony was the only one that I saw really trick it today

Anthony's flat 360 from a different angle, this guy has got a bit of boost!

Luke Fulton with nice looking stretched out tailwhip on the second double on the barge.
Another local rider, Luke Fulton, with nice looking stretched out tailwhip on the second double on the barge. I'm pretty stoked about this shot!

Christian Wright with a tailwhip on the last quarter of the Jump Ship course in Victoria BC
The course ends with this little quarter, and a few of the riders were working on tricking it when it was too windy to jump the bigger stuff. A few people thought about transferring from it across to the landing of the step down, Semenuk actually tried it, but washed on the landing.

The rider list as it stands right now. Qualifying is tomorrow...

Most or all of those riders are Canadian or American, I don't see any Europeans or other foreigners competing here. In my opinion, they should have a mutual place for these kind of contests, like on the east coast of the U.S.A or western Europe. This way contests will be more diverse nationality wise and people can get more points instead of spending their podium checks on airfare and other things. I know we don't have every contest in Canada or the U.S., but Silver Events like these held away from some riders who could win and get closer to the top, should be held in a mutual place, same for gold. Just expressing my thoughts.

Its only an silver event so it wouldnt be worth it for europeans to travel here.

half the people at crankworks don't have any idea whats going on either. This event is promoting Mountain Biking, and getting people stoked. What's the issue with that?

the big names who have big sponsors would be able to make it down. plane ticket wouldnt be to bad for the big riders it would be the smaller more local pros who would have a problem. i just dont get why the fmb allowed an invitation only contest

flag jonlake (Jun 12, 2011 at 18:42)
It was Silver event, some of the European riders where asked, but as it's very expensive, a silver event, and a big trip, it wasn't very justifiable I suppose. Alan Hepburn showed up, He's Australian that count? The event was here to showcase Mountain Biking to a large crowd, to do something a little different, and to progress the sport. For the people getting upset about it, try doing something positive for the sport rather than just complaining about it from behind your parents computer.

There have been 4 FMB events so far in Europe this year, and this is only the second in North America. So anyone that is concerned about the Europeans not having enough events should just stop talking until they actually know something about what they're saying. As for the invitational part, yes it was an invitational event. And pretty much every rider that is competing in the FMB tour was invited. For logistical reasons there really wasn't room for many more riders than the ones that were there, but room would have been made for any of the other pros that wanted to come. As far as it being an event for local pros, sure, that's why Montgomery and Semenuk and Groves and Goldman and AT and Fogelquist and T-Mac and Aggie and Sorge were there, none of them are locals, and a lot of them traveled 6 hours or more to get here, some of them more like 12 hours....

Hell Barge was a huge budget publicity stunt for a high profile film, Jumpship is in it's first year as a contest with far less support. A lot of the work going into this contest is done by volunteers, many of whom are the locals who are riding the event. Please do not expect everything you see to be up to the level of your Disorderly fantasies when in many ways this event is "testing the waters" if you will.

thank you

the main issue with events being 'invite only' is how is it pushing the sport, if the new, upcoming guys dont even get the chance to try out? The way Crankworx was about 5 years ago was awesome, giving the chance for anyone to have a go. That's where a lot of todays riders came out. Also World Tour? Where's the events in the southern hemisphere? If NZ and Australia got a round each it would truely make it an international tour.

flag brett236 (Jun 11, 2011 at 16:34)

plenty of mtb talent round here buddy. just the fact that most of us are just finished school/ still in school and dont have the money to get overseas yet. Next year, you'll see... We could easily hold 1 if they're actually gunna back it.
  • + 3
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Jun 12, 2011 at 0:26)
That's not the way it works though. If you want to have your event on the FMB Tour you can approach them and have it added. But that means that you have to have an event to start with, the FMB sanctions events, they don't create them. So don't complain about it, start an event and invite all the pros and see if you can get FMB to add it to the tour. You may need to have a bunch of confirmed riders that are in the Tour already, and you'll probably need to have a bunch of prize money to get them to come, but it's definitely doable...

Plenty of shredders here, but there is a lack of people that are good at organising events around here. flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Jun 13, 2011 at 13:48)
Two of your comments? I only replied to one when I stated that Kelly McGarry and other mtb and bmx riders were from NZ. I didn't mention other names but there is a decent list of great NZ dirt jumpers including guys like Paul Langlands etc that ride 26" bikes. Just because you personally don't know them doesn't mean the haven't made a name for themselves. You didn't even mention Kelly who is pretty much a household name in BMX and slopestyle. I mentioned "BMX" riders like Jed in response to your statement that "not saying there isnt any good guys in new zealand im just saying there isnt to many that actually make a name for themselves" where you didn't specify bmx or mtb. And as far as passing your comments off as bullshit I don't pass off your comments at all, however you have a bad habit of making comments about stuff you really don't know much about. You really don't want me to go into detail about that. You have made some great points, but they often get lost in the mess of other stuff you say...
